One never-ending topic in Florida lately has been the infamous Amendment 3. It is the talk of the state due to what it wants to do with property taxes, which, as many put it, would likely only benefit a few. However, a new study has come to light, and it seems that if Amendment 3 passes, it would affect renters a lot, as they could maybe end up paying a lot more money to cover some of the losses from the tax exemption in this proposal.
For those who don’t know yet, there is a new study that has landed on a few news outlets in Florida that speculates renters could end up paying more if Amendment 3 becomes a reality.
This Amendment would increase the property tax exemption greatly. As many have put it, this sounds like a benefit, at least at first. Homeowners could save a lot of money, which, in this economy, never hurts. However, based on the recent study, the ones who could be harmed by these are none other than renters.
The study says that if Amendment 3 passes, renters could start paying more, since the state has to get that money back somehow. That isn’t a wild assumption, given that without the usual property taxes, some areas in the state could bleed out. So, the only normal course of action could be to charge renters more.
According to the study, the increased costs may vary depending on the rental location. Some apartment rentals could see an increase of $400, while those renting a house could look at a $1,000 increase or more. This is speculated to happen by 2028.
The grim reality is that, if that happens, it would be a blow to several Floridians’ economies. Many already know how expensive it is to live in Florida, so adding even more expenses would just make things worse.
Florida Voters Urge People to Say ‘No’ to Amendment 3
As you can expect, people are already urging voters in Florida to say no to Amendment 3. The surprising part is that even some homeowners are against this.
“I’m a homeowner and voting a hard no. Amendment 3 is nothing more than a political stunt and an attempt to shift power away from local governments to the state.“
“Homeowner and also no from me.“
For those still on the fence, some Redditors have given some explanations as to why Amendment 3 could backfire.
“All prices get passed to renters. Property tax, insurance, everything. It just shows up as one bill. Rent.“
Right now, it appears many are hoping for Floridians to vote no on this proposal and to prevent it from becoming a reality.
