Illinois Senator Dick Durbin is demanding accountability from the Trump administration after highlighting the growing number of deaths among individuals held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. His criticism has sparked divided reactions, with some expressing concern about detention conditions while others question whether Democratic lawmakers are prioritizing immigration detainees over American citizens.
Durbin shared his concern on X and claimed that more than 60 people have died in ICE detention since President Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025. The senator’s statement followed an announcement from Senate Judiciary Democrats about the death of a 43-year-old detainee, which they said marked the 29th death in ICE custody this year.
Durbin described the administration’s immigration detention practices as cruel and inhumane, arguing that federal officials should be held responsible for the treatment of people in government custody. His post did not identify the latest deceased detainee or explain the circumstances surrounding that person’s death, leaving important questions about the incident unanswered.
The senator’s criticism comes amid continued disagreements over the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies, including detention practices and the treatment of people awaiting immigration proceedings. While Durbin emphasized the number of deaths, determining whether detention conditions contributed to individual cases requires examining medical findings, facility records, and other available evidence.
Researchers and medical experts have also examined the increase in deaths in ICE custody, with a June 2026 Human Rights Watch report finding that mortality rates rose disproportionately to the growth in the detained population. The report identified cases involving delayed medical treatment and inadequate care, although its findings do not establish the cause of every death Durbin referenced.
Durbin has previously raised concerns about medical care, detention oversight, and the federal government’s responsibility to protect people held in immigration facilities. In February of this year, he joined other Democratic senators in requesting information from immigration officials about detention deaths and compliance with federal standards, making his latest statement part of an ongoing effort to scrutinize ICE operations.
Comments and Reactions to Dick Durbin’s Concerns about ICE Detention Deaths
Several commenters criticized Durbin for focusing on people in immigration detention, arguing that lawmakers should devote greater attention to Americans harmed by crimes involving undocumented citizens, with one person writing, “Now tell us how many CITIZENS were killed by illegals.”
Others questioned whether the reported deaths demonstrated inadequate detention conditions or reflected the health problems of individuals entering ICE custody. A different commenter asked, “Really? What’s the per capita ice detention deaths under Biden and Obama? What’s the rate of natural deaths? Trump is handling multiples in detention compared to the Democrats.“
As Durbin demands accountability, frustration continues to grow online. With lives lost and serious questions still unanswered, calls for greater scrutiny of ICE detention facilities aren’t going away.
