A new report has surfaced suggesting that Castlevania‘s executive producer Adi Shankar is in the midst of talks to adapt Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda into a television series.

Shankar took to Instagram to tease the project saying that he was, “working with an iconic Japanese gaming company to adopt one of their iconic video game series into a series.” The Wrap claims that that Japanese series is The Legend of Zelda. Shankar also announced that he would reveal the project on November 16th at 1 pm.

Recently, Shankar has executive produced Netflix’s excellently made Castlevania anime series which has already been renewed for a season 3 ahead of its season 2 premiere. Reviews for season 2 have been stellar so far with the show earning a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, an 11% rise from the first season’s 89%. Many sites, like IGN, claim that Castlevania is  “the new gold standard” for video game adaptations for television and film.

Legend of Zelda

A Legend of Zelda TV series has been in the works for some time now, with rumors first surfacing in 2015 about a potential series. At the time, the series was rumored to be a live-action ‘Game of Thrones‘-type show and would debut on Netflix. As far as this rumored Legend of Zelda series, it has not yet been made clear if the show is anime or live-action and whether or not Netflix will be distributing it. However, because Shankar is helming the series, it is a good bet it will be an anime and debut on Netflix’s service.

Nintendo seems to be letting their franchises loose of their decades-long, iron-clad grip they’ve seemed to have had on them. Recently, Nintendo has announced two incoming projects: one is a Super Mario Bros. movie made by Illumination Entertainment, the creators of the Despicable Me series. The other is the creation of a Super Nintendo World theme park at Universal Parks across the world.
