Award season has finally begun, kicking off with the Golden Globes wrapping just last week. Now, it is time to look to the future as The Oscars are just around the corner. Nominations have yet to be released, but viewers should expect them to drop soon. The Academy Awards usually releases the nominees on the second to last Tuesday of the month of January. That means that the nominees are set to be unveiled on Jan. 22.

Voting has been going on since Jan. 7 and will close on Jan. 14 giving the academy just over a week to tabulate votes across 24 categories. In recent years, The Academy has released their nominees in the morning, at 9 am EST/ 6 am PST. You can watch the reveal live on The Oscars home website as they unveil them on Jan. 22.

The Oscars

The 91st Oscars is set for Feb. 24, almost exactly a month after nominees are revealed. Viewers can watch on ABC or stream the ceremony online through a myriad of TV streaming services. Some changes have been made to hopefully revamp the show for this modern age. A hard 3-hour time limit has been implemented to keep the show more brief than usual, but who knows if acceptance speeches can actually be cut down to fit the time limit.

The Oscars has been met with much controversy leading up to the actual event. The announcement of the Popular Film category, which set out to honor the years biggest blockbusters, was not met with a warm reception and was later shelved. More recently, a very public issue with comedian Kevin Hart hosting The Oscars has put a negative spotlight on how The Academy handled the hiring and subsequent firing of the actor. Now it seems that for the first time in a long while The Oscars will not have a host for the event.

The Oscars

If The Golden Globes are any indicator for what we should expect from the nominees, look out for films like Bohemian Rhapsody, A Star is Born, and Greenbook and Black Panther to be represented as well as the animated tour de force Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. For all things, award season be sure to check back to The Nerd Stash.
