There’s a new Star Wars trilogy coming from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Fans have known the duo would be handing in their swords for lightsabers, but until now, very little information was given.
While speaking to TVLine, HBO Network President Casey Bloys talked about the reason behind the delayed production of the upcoming HBO series Confederate (Benioff and Weiss’ next show):
“Dan and David are finishing up the final season [of Game of Thrones] and then they are going to go into the Star Wars universe,” Bloys told TVLine Friday. “When they come out of that, I assume they will come back to us.”
Bloys went on to clarify that the delay had nothing to do with the controversy surrounding Confederate:
“The delay has to do with [the fact] that they were offered three movies,”
Fans can now start the rumor train with the information that the overlords of Westeros will be tackling a whole new Star Wars trilogy. The one thing we do know is that Luke, Vader, and the rest won’t be involved. Lucasfilm has stated that the Skywalker Saga will end with J.J. Abrams’ Episode IX later this year. Setting a new trilogy either in the past or the future is key to the series’ continued success. This tactic also gives a new generation of writers some breathing room and more creative freedom.
Little else is known about Benioff and Weiss’ project. For now, everything is simply hearsay and speculation. Disney and Lucasfilm are getting set for Episode IX in December and the final season of GoT is debuting in April. All parties involved in the new Star Wars trilogy currently have their hands full. Fans will have to wait a little longer before the release of any new information.
Sith and Jedi alike have been left wondering what Disney had planned to do after the disappointment of Solo last summer. The Mouse House had to rethink their strategy once the remaining “Star Wars Story” standalone films were put on hold.
It was also announced in 2017 that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would helm his own new trilogy. The Last Jedi was quite the divisive film, with some fans hating it, while others praising Rian’s take. Johnson, Benioff, and D.B. Weiss are the future of the franchise and only time will tell if they can steer things in the right direction.
There are no release dates for either trilogy. Depending on the success of Episode IX, Disney might fast track both to keep the momentum going. With the monster success of GoT, Benioff and Weiss could just be what Lucasfilm needs to bring more moviegoers to a Galaxy Far Far Away.
