According to Star Wars News Net, Disney is developing an Obi-Wan Kenobi limited time series that would air on the company’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+. Star Wars News Net states that this limited time series could be up to six episodes long and would be Disney’s next big Disney+ project.
Until these reports are confirmed, it’s still important to take this news with a grain of salt. That being said, this would be a no-brainer for Disney. The concept of an Obi-Wan Kenobi film has been rumored to be in development for years now and fans have been dying to see this character, and Obi-Wan actor Ewan McGregor, back on-screen for quite some time. It may not be a feature-length movie but, a limited time TV series may actually be the better option for this project. Solo: A Star Wars Story underperformed at the box-office, acting as evidence for those who believe that the general audience is starting to get Star Wars fatigue. Star Wars: Episode 9 releases in the Holiday season this year and, after that, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is expected to start on his new Star Wars trilogy. Somewhere in all of that, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will also start production on another, completely separate, Star Wars trilogy. That’s a lot of new Star Wars movies.
To succeed, it would probably be best if the supposed Obi-Wan Kenobi series lands on Disney+ alongside Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian as one of their flagship shows.
McGregor has talked about returning to the role and is open to it, telling reporters back at the 2018 Golden Globes:
“There’s a lot of talk, and I’d be happy to play him again, but I don’t know anything more than you do”
