Horizon Zero Dawn just celebrated its 2 year anniversary. The PlayStation 4 exclusive was met with wide critical praise when it released, but now it is clear to see that it also had major commercial viability as well. Guerilla Games managing director Hermen Hulst wrote in a blog post that Horizon Zero Dawn has now sold over 10 million copies since it’s release in 2017.
This is big news as Sony looked at Horizon Zero Dawn as their new tentpole series along with the likes of Uncharted or Infamous. 10 million copies are no easy feat for any game, much less a console exclusive that is only available to a subset of the gaming market. This news should give fans hope that a sequel will be coming in the near future, maybe a PlayStation 5 launch title!?
Hermen Hulst went on to say this about Horizon Zero Dawn and it’s achievements:
The idea that we were able to bring Aloy’s journey to so many players is astounding. We’ve been deeply moved by the enormous amount of fan creations you’ve posted online, as well as the heartfelt letters you’ve sent sharing your favorite moments from Aloy’s journey.
Also included in the blog post is a plethora of little lore based tidbits to peel through. These include easter eggs included into Horizon Zero Dawn related to Guerilla Games other large franchise, Killzone. Hulst also went over a little anecdote on how the character, Aloy, first came to life visually. It was a happenstance where he took a sick day off from developing and saw Hannah Hoekstra, the real-life character that Aloy’s character model was based on. There are plenty more interesting tales of development present in the blog post, so be sure to check it out!
