This is yet more good news for the 56-year-old actress, who has enjoyed a lot of sci-fi success in her recent career. As well as her roles as Georgiou and her “mirror universe” counterpart in Discovery, she is due to lead the cast of a spin-off called Section 31. She also camoed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as Aleta Ogord. Therefore, she has the experience necessary to tackle roles in big-budget sci-fi productions like Avatar.
“Throughout her career, Michelle has always created unique and memorable characters. I look forward to working with Michelle to do the same thing on the Avatar sequels”, said James Cameron, in a statement on Deadline.
In November 2018, Cameron announced that filming on Avatar 2 and 3 with the principal cast was complete. The two films, which were shot back-to-back, are due for release in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Although the last two sequels have been greenlit Cameron has been cautious about their possibility, being quoted as saying, “Let’s face it, if Avatar 2 and 3 don’t make enough money, there’s not going to be a 4 and 5.”
The first film has the second-largest December opening ever, earning $26,752,099 on its opening day and $77,025,481 on its opening weekend. This puts it behind I Am Legend in that regard. Overall, the film achieved a remarkable worldwide revenue of $2,787,965,087.
47 days after its release, Avatar surpassed Cameron’s other big flick, Titanic, as the highest-grossing film in Canada and the United States.
Avatar is notable for their advanced motion capture technology, helping morph actors into photorealistic depictions of the Na’vi, the film’s iconic blue humanoid species.
