John Wick Hex has been announced as a strategy game based on the hit movie series of the same name. Developed by indie studio Bithell Games, studio head Mike Bithell has promised “fast-paced, action-oriented,” gameplay with strategic, resource management mechanics mixed in. Making player’s use “precise strategic thinking,” is a stated primary goal of John Wick Hex‘s development.
Publisher Good Shepard Entertainment disclosed further information on John Wick Hex through their YouTube account shortly after the announcement.
“Created in close cooperation with the creative teams behind the films, John Wick Hex is fight-choreographed chess brought to life as a video game, capturing the series’ signature gun fu style while expanding its story universe.”
John Wick Hex will feature a brand new, original story although we do not have details on what we can expect from its narrative yet. However, it has been confirmed that it will have some form of progression model including unlocks for weapons, suits, and locations.
Bithell confirmed the PC and Mac release of John Wick Hex will launch as an Epic Games Store exclusive. This is the latest game to join an ever-expanding list of Epic Games Store exclusives like Metro Exodus, Dangerous Driving and, perhaps most controversially, Gearbox’s upcoming Borderlands 3. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 releases can be expected but the potential for a Switch release remains unclear.
It’s likely not a coincidence that this announcement comes just days before the new John Wick film, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, comes to cinemas. Touted for a May 17th release in the US, Lionsgate’s latest exploration into the film industry might be a good opportunity for potential fans to get interested.
Translating John Wick’s neo-noir assassination driven action shouldn’t be too difficult a task for Bithell Games. The very theme of it feels as though it should translate across well to a video game and Bithell has shown his vast talent with his development of indie puzzler game Thomas Was Alone. Early signs seem to suggest we could be in for a pretty great game.
