Spotify has been under fire for several weeks now over its support for ICE. While many major brands partner with government agencies, this one has taken things too far for fans of the music streaming app. The brand partnership includes running ads for a career in ICE, complete with a hefty sign-on bonus. And while Spotify might be making money from its marketing, it’s also making enemies in Los Angeles.
In an effort to fight back, political activists took a bold stand. Rather than hanging posters or handing out fliers, activists did something even bigger to protest the brand. Projected images of brutal ICE raids and arrests slowly began appearing on buildings throughout Los Angeles, credited to activists against Spotify. Some read, “Cancel Spotify until they end ICE ads,” with others saying, “Tell Spotify, get ICE ads off the air.”
The peaceful act of protest garnered support from many, who canceled their memberships after the projections went live. Others offered alternatives to the music streaming service, and some even listed additional brands running ICE ads. The video of the projections, which was posted on both Reddit and Facebook, has also elicited mixed reactions.
One user commented, “Canceled Spotify to vote with my $$. Most effective.” Another said, “People aren’t furious, they are relieved and happy it’s [the raids] happening finally.” To this, one user on Facebook replied, “People who have a heart and soul are not agreeing with you.” Others commented on the video, sharing screenshots from supporters of the ICE ads.
The only statement Spotify has made is that the ads comply with its policy. However, some people have pointed out the fact that this is not the same as condemning the agency altogether. Without a concrete statement from the brand on where their values stand, protests such as L.A.’s illuminated media will only continue to pop up.
