We’ve seen many movie franchise revivals and even a few that refuse to die. Of the former, there is one that we never thought would return. Today, Mel Brooks announced that Spaceballs 2 is coming. But that’s not all. It would seem that Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis, and Bill Pullman are all returning to the big screen. As you can imagine, fans everywhere are going wild with this news, especially since Spaceballs is regarded as one of the best comedy movies of the ’80s. While we still have to wait a few years for it, it is great to know that the Shwartz is on its way.
The official announcement starts with an obvious joke on the current Star Wars landscape. It mentions how thirty-eight years ago, there was only one Star Wars trilogy. But now, there are sequels to the prequels, countless TV spinoffs, 7 Jurassic Parks, two different Robert Downey Jr.’s, two DCU attempts, among other things. Yes, even Oppenheimer was mentioned there. As you can see, the announcement brings the iconic humor from the original Spaceballs, which we really hope makes it to Spaceballs 2.
Once the “credits” roll, we see 98-year-old Mel Brooks talk about the upcoming project.
“After 40 years, we asked, ‘What do the fans want?’ But instead we’re making this movie.” He then ends with the iconic, “May the Schwartz be with you.“
The great news about this is that Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis, and Bill Pullman will return to reprise their roles. This is quite shocking as Rick Moranis is coming out of retirement just to don the Dark Helmet suit once more.
As you can imagine, a lot of people reacted to this joyous occasion:
“In the future, they will ask: where were you when Spaceballs 2 was announced? And I can proudly say: I was on the toilet.” – thesoppyw*nker via YouTube.
“Rick Moranis turned down every new Ghostbusters movie but was 100% on board with this! That’s all I need to know!” – HalloweenYearRound via YouTube.
However, some fans are worried Spaceballs 2 won’t reach the same heights as its predecessor. Many things have changed in the movie landscape, and some jokes might not do well today. Yet, Mel Brooks has been a comedy genius, so we know he’ll do something equally amazing.
