After serving as the representative for Colorado’s 6th District in the U.S. House since 1993, Diana DeGette could lose the Democratic primary to newcomer Melat Kiros, who is only 29 years old. The polling results reverberated on social media, and many Colorado residents criticized DeGette while praising Kiros.
As reported by Zeteo, a new survey conducted by Data for Progress found Kiros leading DeGette 41% to 36%. This marks a dramatic shift from March, when DeGette led with 40% support compared to Kiros’ 7%. If the trend continues, Kiros will likely become the Democratic nominee after the primary.
These stark changes show how heated the political race in Colorado is becoming. Kiros is backed by the progressive super PAC Justice Democrats, which also promoted the survey. DeGette, on the other hand, has received support from more traditional groups, including organizations linked to the real estate industry and pro-Israel advocacy groups.
Colorado Residents React to DeGette’s Recent Polling Results
There are many possible reasons why a well-known politician such as DeGette may be trailing Kiros, but reactions on Reddit’s r/Colorado suggested that many voters are growing tired of establishment Democrats. One person said: “I swear I’m not voting for a single incumbent.”
Others added: “Centrist do-nothing democrats that have either sat back or have outright bent the knee to Trump have a rude awakening coming. They are supposed to be the opposition party, and since they don’t want to oppose, they will be replaced.” That opinion was shared by multiple users. According to one commenter: “I’m not in that district, but I’m rooting for her. Establishment Dems are almost as bad as Republicans at this point.”
Another reason cited by voters was the strength of Kiros’ campaign: “I have yet to see a single yard sign for DeGette. Meanwhile, Kiros has signs on almost every block from Colfax to Englewood, and I’ve had two Kiros canvassers knock on my door since May 1st. There’s a very clear mismatch of local energy and enthusiasm.” Someone else wrote: “My boomer centrist Dem parents voted for Kiros without any pressure or promoting or discussion from me. DeGette is toast.”
Colorado’s Democratic primaries are set to be held on June 30 and will decide which candidates move on to the election. It remains to be seen which of the two candidates will represent the 6th District.
