AI Edits Have Reached a New Level as Homeowners Are Allegedly Beautifying Their Properties To Make Listings More Attractive: ‘This Should Be Illegal’

It should not be allowed

We all know AI remains a controversial topic, as it has caused more harm than good. While some people might use it for lighthearted things like memes or even menial tasks like summarizing something, certain individuals are taking it a bit too far. According to some Reddit users, an alarming number of house listings have been allegedly “enhanced” with AI, which makes potential buyers and internet users wonder whether this is legal at all.

The most recent example comes from Reddit user HomeofAlex, who shared two pictures of a house listing. In the bottom one, you can see the house as is. It has a few flaws: the facade shows some damage, and the lawn isn’t in the best condition. However, if you take a look at the top picture, it is completely different.

The allegedly enhanced image in this house listing suggests that AI may have been used. The house now has a gorgeous lawn, a perfect facade, a different door, and even more shrubbery. Naturally, the picture looks much better, and in a house listing, it would surely get a lot of attention. Still, some people believe that this is unethical and could potentially be considered illegal, as it borders on fraud.

Redditors Believe Using AI In House Listings Should Be Considered Fraud

Since this isn’t the first case of alleged AI use to enhance a house listing, people think there should be consequences.

“I’m not a lawyer, but I feel like this should be illegal.”

“Before AI, realtors would use camera tricks to make a space appear much bigger than it really was. I remember a case from my photography class where a buyer traveled a significant distance to see a property, only to discover that the photos were a gross misrepresentation of the actual space. They sued and won, if I remember correctly.“

On the other hand, some Redditors think that, despite the altered images, some potential buyers will just turn around and leave once they see the real property.

“The altered version might get people to come look at the property, but they’re going to immediately turn away as soon as they see what it really looks like.“

In the end, and as many claim, this will only backfire. AI or not, once someone sees the actual property, they will realize it was a scam attempt. Still, some believe real estate sites should have better control over allowing alleged AI enhancements in house listings.
