Imagine getting up early in the morning for work, but today you’re feeling unwell. Knowing that you have been a reliable worker in the past, you call out sick to prioritize your health. But to your surprise, your manager makes a home visit to get you to come to work. For two Alaska Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge workers, this became their reality, and one Alaskan Lodge employee decided to confront management regarding the harassment.
The video begins with Jay, an angry employee at Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge in Alaska, confronting a manager about banging on the doors of two coworkers’ rooms. What did the coworkers do? They had called out sick for the first time. Jay, awakened by the intense banging on doors that lasted well over five minutes, came down from his room to report the blatant harassment. The manager, convinced of her consideration, repeatedly states, “I am very considerate,” while denying any harassment and claiming the other workers are not actually sick. “They called in sick, and I had to go knock on their doors.” There’s no proof or anything, just her assumption, so it must be correct.
When Jay escalates the issue to HR, both the HR representative and the manager team up against him, accusing him of being confrontational and instructing him to “lower your tone” as he respectfully voices his concerns. The HR employee, in retaliation, says, “With all due respect, you’re a bartender here,” and orders him to leave his office. The accusations of talking down to staff are really solidified with these quotes. Once the Alaskan Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge employee expresses all his concerns, very directly and without holding back, Jay is told to pack his bags and leave.
TikTok and Reddit Users Reactions
One TikTok user commented: “‘Lower your tone’ is code for ‘I’m dominating the conversation and I need you to know I’m the boss.'” Reddit and TikTok users have reacted strongly to the worker’s treatment, taking to Yelp to voice their outrage. Users have flooded the review site with comments about the poor treatment of staff, experiences of calling in sick, and sharing the video. Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge now holds a dismal 1.9-star review on Yelp.
While the manager and HR ignored the employee’s complaints, the public heard them loud and clear. Given that businesses often face backlash from controversial videos, the Alaska Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge might feel compelled to address the situation with the manager and HR employee to preserve their reputation, what little is left of it.
