If you thought political beliefs are not a huge factor in relationships, think again, because one woman from Albuquerque, New Mexico, US, has practically made political beliefs her primary dating requirement. Sadly for certain Americans, this particular Albuquerque bachelorette only prefers Palestine supporters and guys who don’t like America, as was stated in her dating app profile.
Reddit user External_Soup668 was among the first on the Hinge dating app to discover the Albuquerque woman’s profile. Apparently, the 37-year-old woman who works for Keres Consulting in Albuquerque was looking for someone who had the following qualities:
“Critical thinking, looking for an anti-capitalist & anti-imperialist who is passionate about collective liberation. If you like America and/or don’t care about Palestine please don’t match with me,” says the profile.
What caught the Reddit user’s attention, however, was the use of watermelon emojis in the Albuquerque woman’s Hinge profile. Hence, the Reddit user posted on r/Tinder to ask what those watermelons meant or whether it might have been anything cultural or possibly sexual (given that it’s a dating app).
Turns out the watermelons were also political, as they represented the colors of the Palestinian flag. Apparently, apps like Hinge or other dating apps don’t allow the Palestinian flag emoji, so the users grew more resourceful. Hence, the Albuquerque woman’s post has gained significant traction on the subreddit.
While many liked the explanations from those who knew how the watermelons stood in for the Palestinian flag, others were somehow bothered by the lady’s relationship preferences. Some of them even resorted to insults, and these were quickly downvoted. The thread has also been locked after several hours because the discussion grew a little too political.
Lots of Guys Got Weeded Out
Usually, most people simply move on after finding out that a stranger won’t date them or have any kind of relationship with them. However, it appears certain people took offense at the woman’s particular dating app profile. Some have praised the anonymous lady’s preference for Palestine supporters, while it appears certain Palestinian supporters themselves have criticized what they thought was a performative form of “support” the woman is giving, especially on a dating app.
As expected, the most downvoted comments on the specific Reddit thread about dating involve people who were slinging unfounded insults at a stranger whose name or appearance they don’t even know. Regardless of how anyone feels, though, it’s not like they could get a chance to swipe on the profile, as it’s only visible on Reddit user External_Soup668’s Hinge session.
“Okay so she hates the US, the country she lives in. Well I mean I’m sure Iran would love to take you or how about Lebanon?” suggests Ecstatic_Scene9999
“Guys in the comments absolutely seething because this woman dares to voice her preferences. When did the men of this country get so fucking insecure jesus, grow some balls and stop caring about what one woman thinks lol,” laughs UranusBoi
“She wants a Molotov cocktail throwing anarchist,” says JustaddReddit
