As the days go by, ICE and the Department of Homeland Security seem to grow more aggressive in their pursuit of endless deportations. It is no longer just about detaining people without warrants out of nowhere. Now they are pushing to deepen cooperation with local sheriffs. And among the first to eagerly jump aboard Trump’s deportation crusade is Florida. Despite previous resistance, all 67 county sheriffs in Florida have now agreed to assist the Department of Homeland Security. This announcement came from Governor Ron DeSantis, who appeared quite pleased with the development. He even boasted that Florida is the first state to offer full, unified support to ICE and its sweeping deportation efforts.
But that is not where it ends. DeSantis now aims to expand this agreement beyond sheriffs, targeting over 400 local police departments across the state. His goal is to make them yet another obedient extension of DHS. Under the new agreements, sheriffs gain significantly more immigration enforcement power. They are now authorized, under ICE’s supervision, to interrogate suspected undocumented immigrants, make arrests, and even execute immigration warrants.
DeSantis seems convinced this is the right direction. He cited a few arrests as examples, including two undocumented Jamaican immigrants accused of distributing fentanyl in the Panhandle, and another undocumented individual wanted on state and federal child pornography charges. To flatter Trump further, DeSantis also took the opportunity to criticize President Biden, accusing him of letting immigrants roam freely and failing to take action. In contrast, he claimed, Florida is finally “part of the solution.”
To back it all up, the state government has allocated 250 million dollars to cover the costs for local enforcement’s involvement in this immigration crackdown. Still, not everyone is celebrating. Critics argue that this push will only increase the number of lawless arrests made without due process. Many have pointed out that people who have lived in the United States for decades, paying taxes and building families, are now being swept up in the dragnet.
Internet users have pointed out that Florida’s aggressive actions against immigrants could seriously harm the housing market. Many noted that a large portion of the state’s construction workforce consists of immigrants, the very people now being targeted by DeSantis and ICE.
One user commented, “Is Florida winning yet? High property taxes, South Florida condo market tanking, low pay and high housing costs, high insurance rates, high rates of homelessness.”
Others shared personal experiences of living in Florida under increased surveillance and pressure from law enforcement. One user wrote, “I am a very white dude who works in a trade lol. The uptick of cops tailgating me in the past month is very noticeable. They are profiling and waiting for any small traffic infraction to pull you over. I have a feeling if I didn’t look like fucking Wonder Bread I’d have been pulled over several times already. And I drive like a grandpa.”
