U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has launched a 45-day immigration crackdown in California, and residents are already worried that the state is being targeted just before the midterm elections. Many Californians considered the operation a form of political interference aimed at suppressing votes against U.S. President Donald Trump.

As reported by The New Republic, “Operation Safe California” has not yet been officially announced, but it is already underway. An anonymous source said officers were told to “go after anybody; they can pick up anybody.” The operation coincides with early voting in California, making locals wary of its motives.

Californians Brace as ICE Launches New Crackdown

Many California residents expressed anger and concern on r/California, and they had several theories about why the operation was happening now. One user wrote: “It is all about suppressing the Latino vote.”

Others had their own guesses: “Violence against ICE or other Feds will be spun as insurrection. Which will then be hand-wavy linked to corrupt elections in states Republicans lose hard. Along with other cringey election claims. Which together will be tested for use in tossing election results.” Another user agreed: “Sacrificing ICE agents so he can try to stay in power? Sounds like something Trump would do.”

One Californian even shared a tragic story that allegedly happened to them earlier this week: “Explains why my teenagers and I saw our first kidnapping this week, just a few blocks from an elementary school about half an hour before children start arriving. I alerted the school so they could be vigilant, but I still sobbed for half an hour when I got to work. They need to be stopped, and beyond voting, I feel so powerless.”

In general, many residents were angry about ICE’s actions: “Every one of these ICE douchebags needs to be thrown in prison for a few years as terrorists. Taking that job is voluntary. No one choosing to work for them is innocent.” Others added: “They aren’t supposed to be wearing masks either, but we all know they’ll keep getting away with doing whatever they want.”

It remains to be seen how “Operation Safe California” will unfold, whether tensions will escalate, and whether the reported crackdown will have any impact on the upcoming elections. In the meantime, many California residents are left wondering what the coming weeks will bring, with concerns over immigration enforcement and community safety continuing to grow.
