Whenever a new RPG game launches, players rush to it in hopes of creating a character they enjoy roleplaying as. While Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader provides players with many options to create their ideal protagonist, there are some things that might be confusing, such as the stats or Characteristics, as the game calls them. With many of them bombarding you as soon as you fire up this game, it is important to know which does what if you plan to survive in this galaxy full of terrors.

Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader – How Stats Work

Even if the game calls them Characteristics, they are essentially stats and work similarly to other cRPGs. You have those that increase your attack power, others that determine how easy your character can dodge, and so on. Learning about them will make building characters much easier and let you know which party members need a certain stat increase.

Characteristic/StatExplanation
Weapon SkillDetermines how efficient a character is with melee weapons. This also affects their parry and dodge chance against melee attacks.
Ballistic SkillThis stat is crucial for ranged fighters. It reflects how much damage a character does with firearms. It also increases their hit chance with ranged weapons
StrengthThis one works for things inside and outside of combat. For combat, it determines how hard they hit with melee weapons. Outside, it reflects how much they can carry.
ToughnessInstead of HP, the game calls a character’s health Wounds. Toughness determines how much of them you have. Essentially, the higher this stat, the larger your health pool is. Also, it influences how resistant you are to poisons and other negative effects.
AgilityAgility improves a character’s initiative and dodge chance when wielding a melee weapon. It’s also useful for the Demolition skill.
IntelligenceThis one improves characters’ Lore skills, such as Imperium, War, Xenos, and Medicae. Most of them useful outside of combat situations.
PerceptionJust like other games of the genre, the higher your Perception, the easier it is to find certain hidden items or places in the game.
WillpowerThis stat increases a character’s resistance toward psychic attacks.
FellowshipThe main stat for Officers. This Characteristic allows characters to buff allies more easily and also influences your Commerce, Persuasion, and Coercion skills.

When building a character, we recommend focusing on the first five stats since they reflect how powerful a party member is. After that, focus on the last ones because they also affect certain skill checks outside of combat. Thankfully, the game’s easier difficulties make building a character more forgiving. Still, those who want a real challenge need to memorize all the stats in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader to face the terrors that await you in space.
