Amazon Studios secures yet another comic book adaptation, this time in the form of Paper Girls.

Deadline recently revealed that the series, based on the graphic novel by Brian K. Vaughn, is being produced by entertainment companies Legendary Television and Plan B. Vaughn himself will also serve as executive producer alongside Stephany Folsom, who is most recently famous for co-writing the screenplay for Toy Story 4. She currently acts as Consulting Producer on another huge upcoming Amazon series, The Lord of the Rings.

The graphic novel series follows the time-traveling exploits of four 12-year-old girls who do a paper round – the titular Paper Girls – in Stony Stream, a fictional suburb of Cleveland, Ohio (which is, funnily enough, where Vaughn was born and raised). While out delivering newspapers the morning after Halloween, the girls unwittingly become embroiled in a conflict between two time-traveling warring factions. One of these factions is a group of teenagers that the girls follow in the future – the other a group known as the ‘Old-Timers’. This conflict is known as ‘The Battle of the Ages’, which itself raises a moral question – is it alright for future time travelers to tinker with the past?

Besides Paper Girls, which he started in 2015, Vaughn has had a long career. While he has worked on a lot of comic book-based works, notably Ex Machina and Baghdad, he has also worked on the popular television series Lost. Hired as an executive story editor for the show from 2006 to 2009, Vaughn was praised by Wired who said he wrote “the best episode of Lost‘s near-three-season run” at the time. They also labeled him as “the greatest comic book visionary of the last five years” (then-2007).

Yet, few would disagree with them even now, given the comic scribe’s talent for provocative, imaginative stories. Currently, the 42-year-old writer is executive producing another one of his adaptations, FX’s Y: The Last Man.

Of course, it’s early days yet so no word on when we will see Paper Girls on the internet. Be sure to check back with us on The Nerd Stash when details finally arrive!
