It looks like things aren’t “OK” between American Idol‘s Steven James and Katy Perry. Years after receiving criticism from the singer on the show, James is now the one critiquing Perry. Following the release of her latest single “OK,” the musican shared his honest thoughts on the track on TikTok. Let’s just say, he wasn’t impressed.
American Idol’s Steven James Reacts to Katy Perry’s “OK” On TikTok
Since “OK” dropped earlier this month, the song has been completely ripped apart by Perry’s fans online. Many believe it’s a “downgrade” from her previous releases, and apparently, Steven James thinks so, too.
Over the weekend, the American Idol alum shared a TikTok listening to Katy Perry’s “OK” in the car. Based on the look on his face, he wasn’t a fan. He appeared visibly confused by the track’s sound before he gave the camera a sly grin, seemingly amused over the situation.
“This can’t be the same person who eliminated me on American Idol 5 years ago,” he wrote alongside the video.
The shade toward Katy Perry didn’t end there because Steven James continued to diss the song in the comments section. After someone compared “OK” to the theme song of the children’s animated series Arthur, James responded with the skull emoji, indicating he “died” of laughter. He also trolled Perry’s fans who found James’ TikTok offensive by using the pop star’s own words against them. “Hey.. it’s gonna be OK,” he wrote, referencing her new lyrics.
When Was Steven James On the Show?
If you’re wondering more about the history between Steven James and Katy Perry, both singers appeared on Season 17 of American Idol in 2019. James was one of the many contestants competing to take home the show’s big prize. However, after he was eliminated, he began using social media to showcase his vocal abilities instead.
As for Perry, Season 17 marked her second year as an American Idol judge. She continued to appear on the show until just a few months ago. After judging for seven seasons, Perry left to focus on “other things” in her life. She likely wanted to spend more time with her husband, Orlando Bloom, and their daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom. The pair welcomed their first child in August 2020 just a year after they engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2019.
Although she’s taken a step back from her career to focus on her family, Perry isn’t done with music. “It’s not like me ending this show means I’m going to go retire on an island, even though that would be fabulous,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I’m gonna go to work.”
