To say the country is going through a tumultuous time is putting it mildly. We’ve seen many things that have affected citizens and have encouraged them to raise their voices and express their concerns. For the unaware, this past week, we saw the Hands-Off Protests nationwide, and hundreds of people attended them. While we all know what they were fighting for, a few people were also trying to create awareness of a particular topic. If you didn’t know, tariffs have affected penguins, too, and a person in Cincinnati, Ohio, took their time during the recent protests to fight for them.
The picture comes from user NordlingNatha in the r/cincinnati subreddit. In the photo, we can see an individual who attended the recent Hands-Off Protests raising a sign that reads, “Stop the Tariffs on Penguins!” This may seem like a joke, but it isn’t.
In the past few days, the current president of the US has put tariffs on islands inhabited only by penguins. These are the Heard and McDonald Islands, which only have a population of seals, seabirds, and penguins, which is the reason behind this person’s sign during the Cincinnati protests.
Of course, these protests were not about penguins only, as there were many other things people were fighting for that day. All of this comes from the 50501 movement, and the recent nationwide gathering was the biggest in the country so far.
Initially, many thought this sign was only a joke, but the penguin tariffs are true, and some Redditors had a few things to say about the matter.
“I didn’t know about this penguin tariff thing until I saw your post.” – zactotum via Reddit.
“Bless you all. Don’t ever give up.” – VandalayIndustries via Reddit.
Lately, tariffs have been a hot topic around the country, and it seems they will remain so for a long time. As you can see, they affect almost everyone, from US citizens to penguins. So, it is nice to see people out there expressing their concerns and looking to make a change.
