Recently, a group of international archaeologists have located an ancient island. It was located near the infamous, ‘Battle of Arginusae‘.
“You bring the crowns and heads of conquered kings to my city steps. You insult my queen. You threaten my people with slavery and death! Oh, I’ve chosen my words carefully, Persian. Perhaps you should have done the same!”
For those of you not familiar with the battle, an Athenian fleet overpowered a Spartan fleet but left both sides with many losses. We all (or most of us) love the movie ‘300‘. The action-packed movie has some of the most memorable quotes and fantastic set pieces that you will ever see. Thinking back to how the Spartans held back a massive Persian army makes us think, “wow.” So, when actual evidence about the Spartan era is unearthed, my ears immediately perk up. The archaeologists have tabbed the island as Kane, a location that has only been hinted at in old sources. Working from the nearby Bademli village, the scientists were able to unearth ancient shards and other materials that allowed them to piece together the history.
“It had been a matter of discussion if the islands here were the Arginus Islands or not until our research began,” archaeologist Felix Pirson from the German Archaeology Institute, told the Doğan News Agency. Pirson goes on to state, “But then we revealed that the ancient Kane was located on an island in the past. The strait between this island and the land was filled with alluviums and created this peninsula. We will get more evident information after examining the geological samples.”
As a man who loves history, the finding of this ancient island is simply awesome. I am interested to see what other pieces of history this amazing group of archaeologists can discover during the Spartan era. Be sure to check out the original story here.
