There’s nothing worse than finding out that the love of your life has passed away. Unfortunately, one woman in Texas learned the hard way that there are indeed things that can make a sad situation even worse. After attending her husband’s funeral, a woman was reportedly let go from her job without a reasonable cause.

Instead of taking that information sitting down, she went directly to her employer to ask for clarification. Unfortunately, the situation seems to have been fueled by miscommunication, or perhaps an attempt to have her removed from the company immediately.

I was fired for going to my husband funeral

The above video was posted to TikTok by @shivonna, which belongs to a woman named Shivonna, and immediately puts you in the middle of the problem: she had taken two days off from work to attend her husband’s funeral and was then reportedly told that she was fired for having done so. She goes on to add further clarification because she is relatively new to the company and doesn’t have any PTO.

However, during the week that the husband’s funeral was set to commence, the woman she reports to was reportedly on PTO herself. So, she decided to go directly into the office and ask someone at the company why she was let go. The video continues from inside the office, where she speaks to a woman about the incident.

According to this woman’s testimony, Shivonna was reportedly not at work for three days last week and hadn’t checked in with a particular person. Shivonna shot back, “I talk completely to you because we had a conversation about me talking only to you,” to which the other woman said, “That‘s exactly right. But I still told you you had to report to Art [sic].”

There was an additional back-and-forth between Shivonna and the woman she was speaking with. Unfortunately, it seems that the situation was never intended to be solved at that moment.

Tons of commenters jumped into the replies to give their opinion on the situation, with one person simply saying, “Wrongful termination and unprofessional.. report it to EEOC.” In an update video, Shivonna reveals that she was still let go from her position and has received a lot of love from the internet after the initial video’s virality.

She also briefly explains the background of her husband’s death, her expectations at the company she was hired at, and what finally led to the events in the video above. More people gave advice about next steps, with another person saying, “File unemployment, EEOC & get a lawyer keep praying got you. Ignore them ppl nobody knows your situation like you. Prayers for you & your kids 🙌🏿” Shivonna currently has a link in her profile that leads to a GoFundMe for donations towards her family.
