At PAX, the talk of the show was predominately led by the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Baulder’s Gate 3, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Of course, this came as no surprise due to all three games releasing within a month’s time. With the threat of the COVID-19 lingering overhead, many sought shelter to ride out the storm. As the virus continued to spread, many in the world searched for ways to occupy their time. On March 20th, 2020, Nintendo finally released Animal Crossing; this release seemed to be the answer for many with Nintendo Switches, and New Horizons sales resulted in multiple locations selling out.
Earlier today, Nintendo revealed its list of top-selling Switch titles as of March 31st, 2020. On launch, Nintendo sold 1.88 million copies of ACNH in Japan. That launch surpassed the country’s previous best-selling Switch title, Pokémon Sword and Shield. According to the sales data, Nintendo sold 11.77 million units of Animal Crossing: New Horizons globally in the first 10 days. In comparison, Doom Eternal and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake did not even reach half of ACNH‘s sales numbers. The 11.77 Million includes digital downloads and New Horizons bundles.
Part of the game’s success can be attributed to its relaxing atmosphere. Players are on an island paradise and can express themselves however they see fit. Do you want an insect collection? Do it, just don’t die. What about a Goth aesthetic? It’s yours for the right price. New Horizons allows players to be who they want to be without judgment. What’s better, players can share and show off their island with their friends.
