If there’s anything we know about October 31, it’s that there’s lots of candy, costumes, and… cats? Well, that depends if your village has any villagers of the feline persuasion because, as we all expected, Halloween fever is coming to the world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Announced today in a video trailer, the free update will arrive on September 30. Players, once the update is downloaded, will be able to grow pumpkins on their island to turn into spooky decorations, as well as being able to buy special Halloween-themed outfits from the Able Sisters. On the theme of customization, you’ll also be able to change your villager’s eye and skin color for added spookiness. At Nook’s Cranny, you’ll be able to buy lots of candy that can be used to give to your fellow Animal Crossing island dwellers as they dress up in suitably scary-cute costumes. Take a look at the video above. Whoever had the idea of making a cow dressed up like a mummy (or… a moo-my? Yeah, terrible, I know) needs to have a raise.
On the actual day itself, you’ll be joined by Jack the jack-o-lantern (because of course he is) and you’ll get to enjoy the festivities with your fellow Animal Crossing villagers. Give them candy and you’ll be rewarded with a nice surprise. Or, should you prefer, you can forego the gift-giving and opt for a trick, rather than a treat. It’s in the phrase, after all, you might as well try it sometime. New emotes will be available during October, and there’s even a NookLink app coming to smartphones that will allow you to emote in-game using your phone.
Outside of the Halloween theme, players who download the update will be able to receive a Ring-Con decoration for their house. Hey, it may not exactly fit in with the rest of the update, but it’s free so we can’t complain. We also got a tease at what comes after this update – November will bring a Thanksgiving and Christmas (although that will likely appear around December) update to New Horizons.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is one of the series’ best entries, and it’s doing well on the sales charts too. It recently passed 11 million units sold. That’s a crowded island. Are you one of those 11 million? Let me know in the comments below.
