Another Hero Shooter Bites the Dust: Star Wars: Hunters Developer Announces Shut Down

The force definitely isn’t with you

Zynga has announced it will shut down Star Wars: Hunters just nine months after its official release. The free-to-play PvP arena game launched on June 4, 2024, for Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, but will go offline permanently on October 1, 2025.

Star Wars: Hunters, which takes place between the events of Star Wars Episode VI and Episode VII, had a troubled development cycle. Originally soft-launched on Android in select regions back in 2021, the game faced multiple delays before finally releasing in mid-2024. Upon launch, the game received a mixed response on all platforms.

Now, less than a year after its release, Zynga confirmed that the game’s final content update will arrive on April 15, 2025. That update will introduce a new Support Hunter named Tuya, who will be made available to all players for free, along with additional in-game content. After that date, in-game purchases will be disabled across all platforms.

While the servers will remain live until October 1, Zynga has stated that no refunds will be issued for Arena Passes, microtransactions, or the game’s premium currency, Crystals. According to the company, the window between March 17 and April 15 is intended to give players enough time to use up their in-game currency and complete Season 5 content. Zynga also plans to extend the current season by three weeks and re-run past events and shop bundles to allow players to finish ranked play and reach the top-tier Kyber 1 rank.

Players will continue to have access to all battlefield maps and game modes during this final period, and a last Ranked Mode leaderboard will remain active through to the shutdown.

The decision to shut down Star Wars: Hunters appears to follow a lackluster reception and underperformance. No future plans for the IP have been announced, but this is another example of a hero-shooter falling short of fan expectations. The most recent instance of this was Sony’s Concord, which ended up being one of the biggest failures in the entire gaming industry. Soon after, Sony announced a change in leadership.
