Texas Rep. Al Green has launched another effort to impeach President Donald Trump, this time accusing him of abusing presidential power through his administration’s handling of ICE and CBP. Green filed H.Res. 1486 on Monday, alleging that Trump bears responsibility for what the resolution describes as unjustified killings and efforts to shield federal immigration officers from accountability.
Standing outside the U.S. Capitol with a copy of the 27-page document, H.Res. 1486, in his hand, Green said he would discuss the resolution in greater detail in the coming days. The Democratic congressman insisted that his latest impeachment effort had nothing to do with political parties or ideology, but rather with “right and wrong.”
“They are about four people who have lost their lives, and there appears to be a cover-up,” Green stated. “These articles will give some details about the cover-up, but also about how ICE and CBP have become organizations operating under the hand of the president that literally have become judge, jury, prosecutor, and executioner when it comes to the lives of people in this country.”
Green’s resolution names Renée Good, Alex Pretti, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero as four people it alleges were unjustly killed by federal immigration officers. The resolution characterizes ICE and CBP as “vicious” and “unaccountable” forces operating with secrecy.
Green also claimed that Trump is “overseeing and defending [the] unjustified killings” carried out by the agencies and accused him of “abusing the powers of the presidency” through them.
“President Trump is brazenly and wantonly devolving the United States Democratic republic into an authoritarian regime,” the resolution reads. “Under President Trump, ICE and CBP operate with impunity while armed with military grade weapons and control vast resources provided by taxpayers to fund President Trump’s anti-democracy agenda.”
Green’s resolution also cites the January deaths of Renée Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, as well as the later fatal shootings of Salgado Araujo in Houston and Durán Guerrero in Maine.
The circumstances surrounding the shootings have been disputed in some cases. Following Araujo’s death, for instance, federal authorities reportedly said he used his vehicle against officers and that the ICE officer fired in self-defense. His family and witnesses challenged that account, while local prosecutors sought to conduct their own investigation into the shooting.
Green argued in the resolution that Trump’s conduct warrants impeachment, a Senate trial and his removal from office.
The Houston shooting remains under scrutiny. Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare said this week that the investigation is approaching a decision point and could soon be presented to a grand jury. Witnesses have disputed the federal government’s account that Salgado Araujo used his vehicle against agents.
Critics Mock Green’s Latest Trump Impeachment Push
On X, critics are dismissing the latest impeachment effort and questioning why Green continues to pursue Trump.
“I’m dying here… this is just ridiculous!” one netizen wrote. Another told Green, “You’re a joke. Articles of impeachment are baseless and you will just look like a bigger fool.” A third added, “You are trying one last attempt to impeach a good man. It’s not gonna work.”
“This is just another personal vendetta against Trump! This won’t go anywhere, your [sic] wasting taxpayers money!” another person said. Someone else mocked, “A president has to have committed actual crimes, not hurt your feelings. That doesn’t count.”
Others suggested that Green should spend his time working on issues that would help Americans rather than pursuing another impeachment effort. “Wow, you democrats have nothing to do. You are only the 200th democrat to do this. I think the drawer is full,” one commenter remarked. Another urged, “Spend your time with something more productive that’s going to help the people.”
Not everyone was against Green’s latest move, however. One supporter praised the congressman, writing, “I salute you, Rep. Green. You have the courage and honor few of your other colleagues do. Thank you so much.”
Green is no stranger to unsuccessful efforts to remove Trump from office, having repeatedly pursued impeachment during Trump’s first term. His latest resolution has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee, and Green plans to discuss the effort and the ICE-related deaths at a Houston press conference Friday. Whether H.Res. 1486 gets any further than his previous attempts remains to be seen.
