If you can recall, The Game Awards 2024 (TGA) created a special award category for Amir Satvat called the Game Changers Award. That’s how special he was and what he did for the video game industry. During the height of the gaming industry’s mass layoffs, Satvat created a database and website that helped laid-off game devs get back on their feet. However, it seems not everyone liked Amir Satvat’s charitable work; the man was bombarded with hate speech and hurtful accusations soon after his TGA appearance.
Amir Satvat posted the specifics of the situation on LinkedIn though it’s a rather lengthy explanation. In it, Satvat claimed that he and his family had been receiving anti-Semitic slurs, and he also discovered several videos mocking his speech– even bullying him since he sounded ‘autistic.’
Moreover, there were some questionable accusations and conspiracy theories that Amir Satvat was apparently a “Tencent agent.” Some ridiculous claims even point to Amir as the one responsible for the job losses.
Amir Satvat’s Reward for His Hard Work
To this, Amir Satvat has responded that he began his project and community nearly one year before he even joined Tencent.
“I started the community November 2022. I didn’t start at Tencent until August 2023.
I’ve never signed a contract or been part of a deal that led to job losses in my career. In fact, in some instances, like at AWS, I put great effort into making sure hundreds of peoples’ jobs were saved during restructuring.
I’ve been accused of creating ‘jail-worthy fraud’… This can happen to you too when you sacrifice over 2,000 hours of your time to help the industry – this is the “reward” for two years of service,“ Amir Satvat explained.
The odd thing about the accusations and hate directed towards Amir Satvat is that he’s not even Jewish though only his wife is. Amir initially didn’t want to speak up about the incident but the hate comments involved his family on the matter, forcing him to defend them.
Thankfully, despite the harsh bullying and toxicity that Amir Satvat incurred, he’s adamant that it won’t affect his mission for the gaming community. Satvat will reportedly continue his public service and provide a platform for laid-off game devs.
Regardless of what you think of Amir Satvat’s work, you have to admit that some of the pervasive toxicity in the gaming community is embarrassing, especially when it reaches spotlights like this.
