Apple Vision Pro is Reportedly Getting Sony PlayStation VR2 Controller Support

Don’t worry, Apple will reinvent the controllers in a few years

Apple and Sony might be joining forces soon to bring the PlayStation VR2 controllers to Appleโ€™s Vision Pro headset. The report comes from Bloomberg, which says that Apple went to Sony sometime around the beginning of 2024 and pushed the idea of a collaboration.

The report adds that Sony has been working on bringing the controllers to Apple Vision Pro for a while. On the other hand, Apple has been in talks with multiple third-party developers to gauge their interest in bringing the PlayStation VR2 controllers to their titles.

Apple launched its extremely expensive mixed reality headset back in February and has been releasing it in other countries ever since. The headset’s launch price was like an Apple product, at around $3500. That price is likely the reason why, in terms of sales, the device has underperformed. To remedy this, Apple is reportedly planning on making and releasing a โ€œcheaperโ€ version of the headset that is around the $2000 mark.

Apple had originally targeted around one million units to be shipped one year after the release of the Apple Vision Pro. But that was far from what happened, and according to a Financial Times report, Apple then proceeded to more than half its initial target, citing the complex process of manufacturing such a device on a large scale. IDC, a research firm based in Massachusetts, forecasted in July, that the Apple Vision Pro wonโ€™t be able to cross the 500,000 unit mark by the end of this year.

The PlayStation VR2 headset was more successful than Appleโ€™s headset, but even then, Sony had to pause the production of the device since they just werenโ€™t selling that well and the company didnโ€™t want to stockpile it.

This is why Sony released a new device that allows the PSVR 2 headset to work on PC with VR games, but it does miss out on some game-specific features like adaptive triggers.
