Ariana Grande’s fans erupted in outrage after the singer-actress was snubbed at the 31st annual Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday. Nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked: For Good, Grande lost to surprise winner Amy Madigan. Fans quickly took to social media, calling the result a major injustice.
Social Media Erupts After Ariana Grande Snub at Critics’ Choice Awards
Grande’s defeat unleashed a storm of reactions online. One fan declared, “the wrong witch won,” while another wrote, “AMY MADIGAN IMA LET YOU FINISH BUT ARIANA GRANDE HAD THE BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS PERFORMANCE!!!”
Some questioned the outcome: “really? was that really the best supporting role of the year?” Others chimed in with frustration: “Ariana robbed back to back.” One hopeful fan looked to the Golden Globes, tweeting:
“Respectfully where is all this Gladys recognition coming from 😭 like the movie was amazing and Gladys was amazing but this award belongs to ARI!!!! pls golden globes come through for my good witch.”
Another commenter added: “Wtfffff the movie was good, but her character was my least favorite part about it 🤨. ARIANA WAS SNUBBEDDDDD! OMG.”
Even with the backlash, Grande appeared genuinely elated for Madigan during the ceremony.
Amy Madigan Surprises Critics and Fans
Madigan, who portrayed the antagonistic witch Aunt Gladys in the R-rated horror film Weapons, seemed genuinely shocked by her win. “I really wasn’t expecting all of this,” she told the crowd. “I thought people would like the movie and I thought people would dig Gladys, but you love Gladys. It is crazy.” She added, “I get makeup tutorials and paintings. I even got one weird thing about how she’s a ‘sex icon,’ which I didn’t go too deep into that one.”
Madigan thanked Warner Bros., the cast and crew of Weapons, and her fans, saying,
“I never really knew what I said to thank your fans. Usually I see that with great music but I’m thanking my fans for [this award] too.”
Other highlights from the Critics’ Choice Awards included Timothee Chalamet winning Best Actor for Marty Supreme, Jessie Buckley taking Best Actress for Hamnet, and One Battle After Another securing Best Picture. On the small screen, HBO’s The Pitt won Best Drama Series, with Noah Wyle earning Best Actor in a Drama Series.
While Grande’s loss may have disappointed fans, her performance as Glinda left an indelible mark, and the online backlash proves that many viewers still believe the “wrong witch” walked away with the Critics’ Choice trophy.
