Benign car accidents are a mix of frustration and inconvenience. Sure, that scuff can be fixed but at what cost? One woman in Phoenix, Arizona is feeling the pain of a new car bill now after she reversed right into another vehicle while attempting to leave her driveway.
TikTok user Crystalnik2 (Crystal) posted a video of the interaction, which involved Crystal and the couple living next to her. Crystal’s neighbors are seen with an elderly man and two vehicles parked in the streets, one of which is a massive truck owned by the elderly man. After attempting to leave for groceries, Crystal tried to maneuver out of her driveway, resulting in damage to her vehicle’s wheel well.
At the start of the video, Crystal and her neighbors are mid-argument. The reason for the car accident, Crystal argues, is because the truck owner—the father of the blond woman—was parked in the wrong spot. She makes a point to show where the divide is, “The sidewalk stops right here.” In the video, it appears nearly half of the back end of the truck bed is cutting into the path of Crystal’s driveway.
The four bicker back and forth on who is at blame, with the one of the neighbors suggesting Crystal is “overblowing” things and that she doesn’t know how to drive. It got so tense that at one point Crystal claimed the neighbors were racially motivated and called them “racist.”
In an update video, Crystal alleges the police did show up and facilitated an exchange in insurance. More importantly, the police backed her up, telling the truck owner he wasn’t supposed to be parked there. As one person shared in the comments, Arizona law 28-873 “explicitly prohibits” vehicles from blocking driveways, public or otherwise.
People Were Overwhelming on Crystal’s Side
One commenter questioned the neighbor’s reasoning, asking, “Why should you have to search to find the owner of the truck?” and argued they were the ones to blame.
Another TikTok user was particularly frustrated by just how much space the truck took up. “Mind you the driveways in AZ aren’t very long so he could be blocking a good majority of her driveway.” So common courtesy would be to avoid blocking someone in.
One commenter was incredulous over the fact the neighbors would try to blame Crystal. They wrote, “I’m trying to understand the audacity of somebody blocking your driveway and acting like it’s your fault.”
Some commenters tried to argue that, although he was illegally parked, Crystal wasn’t going to get anywhere with insurance. According to Crystal, the truck owner was “not held responsible.” When they exchanged information, the insurance company had told her he wasn’t liable either, since his truck was stationary.
Crystal has not shared if her insurance will cover the damages to her car and it’s unknown if the truck owner was given a ticket by the police.
