Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders probably expected conservatives to rally behind an advertisement promoting welfare work requirements, but the person her campaign chose to deliver that message has instead started a fight on the right. The ad features a young white man named Brad who is lounging around and playing video games while relying on government assistance, a portrayal some commentators argue unfairly targets young white men.
Among these critics is Matt Walsh, who directly challenged Sanders after she dismissed some of the criticism surrounding the announcement, saying that the governor’s team made a “very intentional decision” about who would play the welfare recipient and told her not to “insult our intelligence” by pretending not to know why conservatives were upset.
The advertisement introduces viewers to Brad, a fictional young man who Sanders says has “turned relaxing into a full-time profession.” Brad spends his time playing video games, eating snacks, and lounging around before Sanders tells viewers that taxpayers are covering welfare for people like him who “just choose not to work.”
Sanders uses Brad to promote her push for welfare-to-work requirements, arguing the young, healthy recipients should be working, attending school, or volunteering if they receive government assistance. The government previously asked the federal government to approve a work requirement for able-bodied, working-age recipients of Arkansas’ Medicaid expansion program, saying in a January 2025 letter that approximately 220,000 such adults were receiving coverage and an estimated 90,000 had no job.
The policy itself was not the primary complaint from several prominent conservatives reacting to the new advertisement. Sanders also did not back away from the ad after criticism began circulating online. “Some critics don’t like my welfare work requirement ad,” she responded, joking that critics would next complain that Brad should have been eating cookies instead of cheese balls before reiterating that able-bodied people should not collect welfare simply because they choose not to work.
According to USDA data compiled by The Global Statistics, White non-Hispanic Americans make up the largest identified racial group among SNAP recipients in America at 35.4%, compared with 25.7% who are Black and 15.6% who are Hispanic. However, none of these figures establish how common young white men like the fictional Brad are among able-bodied adults who might actually be subject to the work promoted in the ad.

Several commenters echoed Walsh’s frustration with the campaign choice, with one person writing, “I can’t wait for the next generation of republicans who DONT GIVE A [EXPLETIVE] about being called racist. Boomers and Gen X still have this idea they have to be careful about sounding prejudiced. You know what we want?
Transparency and honesty. If that means pointing out discrepancies with any race or immigrant abusing welfare, then at least we can have an open conversation. It’s repulsive they’re still doing this garbage. May as well be an ad paid for by Netflix and BBC conjointly. And her now pretending we’re just nitpicking instead of pointing out an obviously blatant decision to try to avoid calls of racism by using white guys as the whipping boy once again is just a flame to gas light.“
Others thought the advertisement simply misunderstood the audience it was trying to reach, with one commenter suggesting, “The advertisement isn’t meant for you, or for me. It’s meant for a generation of older republicans who haven’t cared about foreigners robbing our country blind for decades, but will get angry if they see their grandchildren ‘wasting time’ on video games.“
