While President Trump harasses Canada with tariffs to ‘improve’ the US economy, the ones who pay the ultimate price for this move are not the businesses but the consumers. At least, that is what a billboard paid for by the Canadian government in Atlanta, Georgia, would have you believe. In a photo by Reddit user jaydogn uploaded to r/pics, the massive sign reads the following: “Tariffs Are A Tax On Your Grocery Bill.”
Multiple users in the post’s comment section claim that they have also seen a similar billboard in their city or state. “I saw one of these on the Florida Turnpike today,” mentions one. “Saw one in Minnesota today by the MSP airport,” seconds another. Several more report to have spotted the Canadian-paid billboard in Detroit, Ohio, and even Las Vegas. At first glance, you might imagine this is all a joke or a ploy made by Americans to support Canada in a stand against Trump. However, this billboard campaign is, in fact, funded by the Canadian government.
Speaking with CNN, the Canadian Foreign Minister says the government has launched this campaign in 12 different states across the US. The signs are being used to “send a message that there are no winners in a trade war.” She continues, saying that there will be countless jobs lots on both sides of the border, “particularly in the US.” The Foreign Minister went on to call Canada “the biggest customer of the US,” saying that many Americans will suffer because of the tariffs. Hence, the statement says that your grocery bill will increase due to Trump’s tariffs. American consumers are the ones who will pay the price.
Americans Will End up With the Bill for Trump’s Tariffs

“Well, it’s true. Consumers end up with the bill for tariffs. Companies and manufacturers won’t just eat the costs. Shocking how many people don’t understand that. Also shocking is how many people think the exporting country pays those tariffs,” remarks the Reddit post’s top commenter.
“It’s crazy how many people can’t follow the basic logic though,” exclaims another user. “Even if you succeed in helping local manufacturers compete [by using tariffs], it will be at the new higher price for the consumer.” One individual mentions how Democrats have been against tariffs, whereas the Trump Administration ruined all the progress made with foreign relations. “Label it the Trump Sales Tax,” they joke.
Even though having a foreign country’s government pay for what’s essentially a form of propaganda on US soil, hopefully, the billboards in Atlanta and elsewhere will open Americans’ eyes to who is actually going to be paying the bill for Trump’s shenanigans.
