Avengers Assemble! Avengers: Age of Ultron continued in its second week to dominate the box office yet again with a massive second week pull of $77.2 million which brings it total to $312.9 million.
Avengers: Age of Ultron should finish with around $550 million in the domestic box office by the end of its run. Unfortunately the sequel will not be able to match its predecessor at the domestic box office which finished with a grand total of $623 million. The movie should exceed in the foreign box office as in three years the market has expanded by a large margin.
With the Avengers taking the box office by storm, newcomer Hot Pursuit debuted with a disappointing $13.3 million opening which could be attributed to its poor reception combined with a poor release schedule (Avengers: Age of Ultron did debut last week).
The comedy starring Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara was not expected to bring in a lot this weekend though with two well known names both in television and film it is still a shame that this comedy duo wasn’t able to replicate buddy comedy The Heat which featured Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock two years ago.
Hot Pursuit will take a big hit next week as new releases Pitch Perfect 2 takes its viewership as well as Mad Max: Fury Road both debut which are both expected to come out strong. Hot Pursuit will have a up-hill battle as it crawls to $30 million by the end of its run (which could be as soon as June).
In third place, Age of Adeline shined with $5.6 million which was an incredible hold from last week as it only dropped 10% to a grand total of $31.5 million. The drama is working as a great counter-programming to the big budget action flicks. Age of Adeline could reach $50 million before it finishes its run.
Furious 7 brought in $5.2 million which was enough for the fourth spot. The fast & furious movie which was breaking all sort of records the last couple weeks has passed the $1.5 billion mark internationally which makes it just one of four movies who have been able to reach such a feat.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 gathered $5.1 million bringing its domestic total to $58.1 million. Ex Machina increased its theatre count to 2,004 and brought in $3.5 million.
Newcomer, The D Train starring Jack Black and James Marsden stumbled in its second weekend in limited release with a poor $469,185 from 1,009 theatres.
Next week, Pitch Perfect 2 and Mad Max: Fury Road debut. Could one of these movies take out the Avengers? Check out later this week in our box office predictions.
