Buying things can be a simple source of joy, but for some people, a certain object or character becomes more than just a purchase. It becomes a collection. And anyone can be a collector, though it often demands a mix of time, patience, and money. That’s why when something happens to those collections, the loss hits hard.
That was the case for someone in New York who recently lost almost their entire Hello Kitty collection in a fire. The damage wasn’t just financial. For collectors, these items carry personal meaning, and losing them can feel like watching years of memories disappear.
Redditor AdrianDaAwesome shared photos on r/Wellthatsucks of the aftermath of a fire at their residence. Worst of all, this New York user explains that after the fire, the worst damage was to their roommate’s Hello Kitty collection. In the before photo, you can see that the roommate had approximately 30 stuffed animals and figures, most of them of the famous kitten, as well as other Sanrio characters such as Pompompurin. However, according to OP, many of the stuffed animals did not survive the fire. And the roomie’s room was destroyed, too.
“Goodbye kitty” said Affectionate_Call778.
“Hello Krispy… That does definitely suck. Probably some irreplaceable items there. But glad everyone is alive. That could’ve gone so much worse,” commented sik_dik.
Many lamented the loss of the collection, but users were more concerned about how OP and their roommates were doing. Fortunately, OP explained that everyone was okay and no one was hurt. Although the strangest thing is that OP mentioned that they suspected the fire may have been started by a cigarette, but did not elaborate further, so as not to accuse anyone without evidence. It seems that there is much more to this incident than meets the eye.
Apparently, only a custom-made figurine that OP gave to their roommate survived, although it was “just a little beat up.” However, the most significant damage from this incident was emotional, suffered by the ex-owner of the Hello Kitty items. This is because OP explains that their roommate seems unwilling to restart their collection. It’s understandable; they lost too much in a moment. Even so, a few other users were trying to contact OP about getting special figures.
“If you live in the States and are open to receiving some HK plushies, I’m happy to send some your way for the holidays,” offered bndrchng.
Hopefully, the roommate can regain their spirits and get some new items from their beloved Hello Kitty.
