If you had visited Baltimore Harbor in Maryland not too long ago, you would have been greeted by a peaceful river with relatively clear water. If you were lucky, you might have spotted some wildlife enjoying the area. Today, however, the scene is very different. Instead of tranquil waters, the surface is covered by a harsh, garish red liquid. What caused this dramatic change? A leak of 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the water. Of course, this spill didn’t happen out of nowhere. It came from the Johns Hopkins Hospital campus nearby. How it made its way into the harbor is believed to be through a leak somewhere in the underground storm drain system. The diesel traveled through these drains and eventually escaped into the Patapsco River, spreading into the harbor waters.
The leak itself was caused during a delivery of diesel by a third-party vendor working with the hospital. The diesel was meant to fill tanks that power backup generators for the hospital in case of a power outage. Unfortunately, a mistake led to the tanks being overfilled, causing the fuel to leak and spill.
Fortunately, officials responded quickly and managed to contain the spill within a marina near the South Central Avenue Bridge in Baltimore Harbor. Over 100 workers stayed on the scene overnight to make sure the diesel did not spread any further throughout Baltimore Harbor. Special teams were also assigned to rescue and relocate wildlife, such as birds and turtles, to keep them safe from the contamination. Sadly, not all animals could be saved, and there were some casualties among the local wildlife.
Officials reported that cleanup efforts have been progressing smoothly, and the intense red color covering the water has been gradually fading. However, they remain cautious because heavy rains could cause more diesel to flow out of the storm drains. To prevent further damage, teams have been flushing the drains and physically inspecting manholes to identify any hidden leaks and stop additional spills from occurring.
People praised the officials for their swift and effective response in managing the incident and preventing the diesel from spreading further in Baltimore Harbor. However, many Maryland residents expressed sadness over the harm caused to local wildlife. “Poor wildlife,” one Redditor commented. Others insisted that Johns Hopkins Hospital should be held accountable for the spill, with some hoping that the state of Maryland would take legal action to seek damages.
