An unassuming gentleman from Baltimore, Maryland, probably won’t be eating bread for a while, because after biting and indulging on a savoury turnover loaf, he discovered that it was actually more mold than bread. The man even dissected the turnover bread to find that there was practically a whole ecosystem of black-colored mold, so dense that it was already forming hairy, cottony strands.
The disturbing discovery was brought to us by Reddit user psilonox from Baltimore, who posted his experience recently on the r/Wellthatsucks subreddit. Oddly enough, psilonox didn’t taste anything weird even after a rather big bite out of the expired bread. In fact, he claimed that the mold actually tasted like too much nutmeg or cinnamon, which isn’t uncommon for bread. It was a bit too late for the Baltimore man since he already swallowed the thing:
psilonox blames his housemate for leaving the moldy turnover bread just lying in their house. Thankfully, several days have passed since psilonox has eaten the moldy bread, and so far, it appears he’s totally fine– even joking that he’s now craving brains. The Baltimore man likely didn’t need any hospitalization at all from the big chunk of mold he ate.
“I’m surprised it didn’t taste more weird, it tasted like it had too much nutmeg or cinnamon. I’m probably going to trip balls or something. When I explained to one of my housemates what happened he said ‘yeah those things are moldy as f***,'” claims Reddit user psilonox
Meanwhile, psilonox is now considering a new housemate since he’s had plenty of other problems with his current housemate, the latest of which includes accidentally feeding him moldy bread. psilonox has since made it clear to his housemate that they can throw away any food that’s spoiled or expired, something that’s usually common sense to most people.
Is Eating Mold Dangerous?
The good news is there’s practically nothing to worry about if you ever find yourself in the same predicament as Reddit user psilonox. As it is, eating mold on bread usually won’t do anything to a full-grown adult apart from giving them an upset stomach, nausea, or vomiting at most.
You’d need to have a really compromised immune system and a lot more mold than a mouthful to see any serious effects. Even then, mold from food likely won’t kill you, though why take chances, right? Your ancestors didn’t experiment with food poisoning just so you can disregard thousands of years of survival knowledge.
Now, despite appearing virtually fine, Reddit user psilonox’s ordeal with moldy bread has left many with a traumatic fear of similar food. Some of the more exaggerated reactions advised the Baltimore man to rinse his mouth with water and soap, while others joked about the situation and potential outcomes.
