2023 has a stacked line of movies, but none are as mysterious as the Barbie movie led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Due to director Greta Gerwig’s history of directing the R-rated coming-of-age movie Lady Bird and the family-friendlier period piece Little Women, nobody could expect what the film would look like. The Barbie teaser trailer is here, and it parodies 2001: A Space Odyssey, making us even more confused about what to expect when it releases next summer (seen below).
A majority of the teaser trailer for Barbie mimics the beginning of Kubrick’s classic film. In the sci-fi flick, early man spot a monolith, which they worship. The flip from Gerwig is Robbie standing over little girls with dolls. The mood switches in the last few seconds as we get a glimpse into this brightly colored world with a spotting of Gosling as Ken and Shang-Chi breakout star Simu Liu. Even with that glimpse into the world that is full of everything pink, not much is known about the story or what to expect from the tone besides it going for something bold and fun.
The leading stars will be joined by Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Ariana Greenblatt (Love and Monsters), Kate McKinnon (Ghostbusters), America Ferrera (How to Train Your Dragon), and more.

Gerwig directed and wrote the film with her husband, Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story). Robbie produced along with being the titled character. She produced alongside Tom Ackerley, Robbie Brenner, Christine Crais, David Heyman, Ynon Kreiz, and Josey McNamara. Michael Sharp, Julia Pistor, and Richard Dickson served as executive producers.
The Barbie teaser trailer leaves plenty of questions unanswered. Hopefully, we can get an official trailer sooner rather than later to get a better idea of the film’s identity. Until then, we will have to wait for a better look before it hits theaters on July 21, 2023.
