It is hard to believe that it was just over 20 years ago that Batman Beyond hit the airwaves for the first time. Premiering on January 10th, 1999, the show served as a sequel to Batman: The Animated Series where Bruce Wayne took on teenage Terry McGinnis as a protege and predecessor to the cowl several years in the future. With Batman: The Animated Series often considered by fans and critics to be the best-adapted iteration of Batman material, Batman Beyond premiered with monumental expectations on its shoulders, but within three seasons and a direct to video film, the show managed to become extremely popular.
Now, it will be making a comeback. No, not with an actual return to the airwaves or a fourth season reboot, but with a Blu-ray remastering. Last Thursday during the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, a Blu-ray box set for Batman Beyond: The Complete Series – Limited Edition will arrive onto the DVD shelves in October from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary. Cracking in at 1,500 minutes of pure entertainment, the box set will feature all 52 episodes (four of which come with audio commentaries with co-creator Bruce Timm and other crew members) of the series across four discs, the uncut version of the movie Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker, and two bonus discs highlighted by 15 behind the scenes featurettes. And to top it all off like a cherry on top, the entire collection comes with a collectible chrome FUNKO Pop!
You can check out the collection in full below.
It is worth noting that only 41 episodes will be fully remastered while the remaining 11 episodes will merely be given an “up-res” makeover. It is also worth noting that Bruce Timm hinted at the Hall H panel that if the box set were to “sell like crazy,” a new season revival would be possible.
The box set is currently available to pre-order on Amazon and most online retailers. The collection will be available on digital on October 15th and Blu-ray on October 29th.
