Adding to list of turmoil amongst the DC movie universe, Ben Affleck revealed in an interview with The Guardian that, though he hopes to direct the upcoming Batman movie, there is no guarantee he will.
“It’s not a set thing and there’s no script. If it doesn’t come together in a way I think is really great I’m not going to do it.”
Despite mixed reviews about Batman vs Superman – and overwhelmingly negative feelings about Suicide Squad – critics and fans agreed that Affleck’s performance as the Dark Knight was superb. So when it was announced that he would both direct and star in a Batman focused solo movie, fans managed to find excitement again for an upcoming DC film, despite numerous letdowns thus far.
Alongside fans’ opinion of his performance as Batman, Affleck has a history of success as a director while simultaneously staring in the films. The two films he is best known for in this regard are The Town (2010) and Argo (2012), which won him the Golden Globe Award, BAFTA, and Director’s Guild Award for Best Director, and the Golden Globe Award, BAFTA, the Producer’s Guild Award, and the Academy Award for Best Picture.
No date is set for the movie’s release just yet, but rumors continue to swirl, including one stating the only DC superhero movie schedule that doesn’t have a name attached to it yet on June 14, 2019, could be slated for the bat instead of the Justice League. Affleck’s attitude seems to support the possibility, as he’s been quoted as saying they’re in no rush to make the movie.
While there is no question that Affleck is still set to star as the lead role, the interview didn’t state as to whether the Boston actor would still be in charge of writing the script either. It seems that, like most of the other upcoming DC films, the decision might well make or break the movie for fans and could possibly be the nail in the coffin for the DC cinematic universe.
