Sad news has struck the TV landscape today. George Wendt, better known for portraying Norm Peterson in the 80s to 90s Cheers sitcom, has passed away. The family is the one who informed the media about the tragic event. At the moment, there isn’t a lot of information regarding the cause of death, and the family wants privacy during this heartbreaking moment. Still, it is sad to see that the beloved Norm, who brought laughter to many with this fantastic TV show, is no longer with us.
George Wendt was born in Chicago in 1948. He started his acting career at The Second City theater in Chicago. Before starring on Cheers, he had other roles in Taxi, Soap, and Gung Ho. He even appeared in a Michael Jackson video. However, he became famous by portraying Norm Peterson in Cheers. This last show ran from 1982 to 1993, making it one of the longest at the time. Thanks to the show’s success, he got six Emmy nominations for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
Apart from Cheers, he continued to work on different films and other big TV shows. Some of his works as an actor include The Twilight Zone, House, Seinfeld, and even The Simpsons. While he wasn’t a protagonist in some of these roles, it was always great to see Wendt’s versatility in any role he had.
At the moment, Wendt’s family has not said anything about the cause of death. So far, the only information comes from Wendt’s publicist, who shared the following statement with different media outlets:
“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.“
For now, all we can do is wait for more information regarding George Wendt’s passing. Still, he’ll be truly missed as one of the icons of comedy from the ’80s and ’90s.
