Creating a story and gameplay that keeps players hooked until the end is complicated, but there are several examples of video games like this. However, the challenge becomes even greater when games continue after a long time and launch several updates every so often. Companies with games of this style live daily in an endless race against time as they strive to deliver something of quality. So, here in The Nerd Stash, we want to list what we consider the best five games for ongoing support in 2024.
5. Diablo IV
Jordan Moyer, Assistant Editor: Diablo IV has always had serious potential to be one of the best ARPGs, but without the continuous support that Blizzard Entertainment, it wouldn’t be at the top of out list. D4 takes us through Sanctuary, following the story of someone thrown into an ongoing battle between Lilith and Inarius, but it definitely doesn’t stop there. Throughout the time it’s been on the market, Blizzard has released multiple seasons and new material and mechanics to keep us intrigued, along with one of the best expansions I’ve ever played. Vessel of Hatred not only brought players back, but also added so much more depth to Diablo IV with a story that I’m sure we can all say had up literally on the edges of our seats in anticipation. Blizzard’s put so much hard work and effort into the creation of Diablo IV, and it’s clear it deserves a slot for Best Game for Ongoing Support in 2024.
4. No Man’s Sky
Time and again, No Man’s Sky has proven its will to stand as one, if not the best, ongoing game in the market. The story of it rising from the ashes like a phoenix isn’t new nowadays. Still, the impressive effort Hello Games does for No Man’s Sky is worth mentioning every year. This year alone, we had huge updates, amazing crossovers, and some of the most fun expeditions, with one of them even jumping onto the bug-squashing bandwagon we were all following. This game will certainly keep growing and keep bringing us some of the best and most jaw-dropping moments in a universe ripe for the picking. And even if we are eagerly waiting for Light No Fire, No Man’s Sky will always have a place in our spacefaring hearts.
3. Destiny 2
Destiny 2 has had some rocky moments, but The Final Shape exceeded expectations. Besides bringing amazing new combat additions, The Final Shape closed the game’s story on the highest possible note. It concluded a plot we’ve been following for years and did it satisfactorily, which not a lot of games can pull off. While there are already many plans for Destiny 2 after defeating the big baddie that haunted us for years, The Final Shape reignited many fans’ passion for the game, and it seems things are about to get better. Overall, 2024 was a terrific year for Destiny 2, and one provided us with some of the most enjoyable content we’ve had in years.
2. Genshin Impact
I became a Traveler practically from the first day Teyvat saw the light of its false sky. Although four years doesn’t seem like a long time, players have already crossed five nations in that same period. The story has high points, and others leave much to desire. Yet, against all odds, Genshin is still here, and not only that, but it has become an example for many other companies. With the arrival of Natlan and what seems to be the end of a stringent contract, it looks as if Genshin Impact was reborn with fire like a phoenix and took flight. New mechanics, along with a story with a strong pace, give me the hope I needed to get through the Pyro Nation and look forward to Snezhnaya.
1. Helldivers 2
While I enlisted late to defend Super Earth, Helldivers 2 stands as the best ongoing game of 2024 due to all the amazing support Arrowhead Game Studios has given it. After completing its most dangerous major order against Sony, Helldivers 2 stood its ground and planted its flag to prove that it was here to stay. It even wrapped the year up with the long-awaited Illuminates, which shook the game up considerably. While there are still a few things the studio needs to fix regarding balance, Helldivers 2 had one of the best gaming stories of 2024. It showed that even if some corporations try to bring a game down, with dedication and a strong fan base, nothing can stop managed democracy. Hopefully, 2025 will be an even better year for Helldivers 2 because no other game can offer an ever-evolving battleground the way Helldivers 2 does.
