After years of waiting, Build 42 finally arrived, bringing basements, new buildings, and many potential base locations to Project Zomboid. While many might still want to return to the good old Rosewood Fire Station or try to clear the Mall, there are a few new towns that hold interesting places for every survivor. So, buckle up and grab your trusty crowbar because you’ll want to visit these places if you want to extend your life span in Knox Country.
Before beginning our list, we want to put out a quick disclaimer. First, we focused on the new locations introduced in Project Zomboid. We avoided the usual places, such as Westpoint, Riverside, Rosewood, etc. Second, everything you’ll see in the list is pure vanilla, with no mods at all. We might make a list with base locations for modded towns and cities, but for now, we’ll focus on the base Project Zomboid experience.
5. Echo Creek Gas Station + Convenience Store
The first base location we have for Project Zomboid Build 42 is in one of the new spawn points. Previously, you could only spawn in the main towns (Muldraugh, Westpoint, etc.), but now, there’s an option to start your game in Echo Creek. At first, this place seems like a run-of-the-mill town with nothing but small houses and a few points of interest. However, there’s a gold mine not far from the main road.
Getting there is quite easy, even after spawning. If you’re at the trailer house park, just walk east until you locate the gas station. What makes this place amazing is the fact that it has two gas pumps, which are always useful in any situation. If you find a car that will likely be out of gas, you can grab some fuel from it and put it inside the car to speed up your traveling time. However, there’s more to it.
The building has two floors, with the first one having (from left to right) a restaurant, a convenience store, and a two-car garage plus a big parking lot. The second floor has a large house with a digital TV, bathrooms, bedrooms, and a full kitchen. But the kicker is the basement below it, which is quite big. It has a sink, a lot of storage, and much space for you to build whatever you want. While Echo Creek is a bit far from other towns, its centric location will make traveling from one place to another much easier.
4. Dark Wallow Lake Cabins
This one is for people who prefer to be away from the commotion, build their own base, expand upon an existing one, or just get in touch with nature after the virus took over Knox Country. First, let’s clarify something: this location is quite far away from the main towns and roads. Its only neighboring towns are March Ridge and Rosewood, and even then, you’ll need a car to travel between these locations. Still, it is a great choice for those who want something a bit more secluded and have the opportunity to level up skills such as trapping, carpentry, and any of the new ones.
To reach it, you can spawn in Rosewood, grab a car, and drive south until you find the train tracks. Keep driving east and take a turn to the south to reach the cabins. We strongly recommend entering through the cabin’s road because the one street leading to the scenic lodges will be packed with zeds.
However, if you’re brave enough, you can head to the lodges as well to find some good loot to disassemble many of the things in this building. I don’t recommend this building as a base because of its sheer size; it is too big for a single-player playthrough. Yet, it is a great location for you and a group of friends to settle down in, so just be prepared to fight a huge horde of zombies there.
3. Irvington Scrapyard
Moving on to a town now, we have Irvington. This is one of the new locations introduced in Project Zomboid Build 42, and its scrapyard is a perfect place for a base. Initially, it might not seem like much. Also, the fact that one building is burned in one of our pictures doesn’t help the real-estate pitch but hear me out. First, it has a lot of fences, which is great to protect you from zeds. Second, it has two small buildings, with one having all house amenities and the other working perfectly as a storage area.
Yet, the best thing about it is the amount of car wrecks in it. You can dismantle all of them to level up your metalworking skill quickly. Furthermore, once you get rid of all these wrecks, you can start building a bigger house or even try to bring a few crops to create a large base. Since everything is surrounded by fences, zeds will have a hard time tampering with your stuff.
To reach this place, drive west from Dark Wallow Lake until you reach the town; the scrapyard will be at the entrance of Irvington. Also, we went with this location because it isn’t in the middle of the town, which is usually full of zeds. You can do a few supply runs and return to your base safely. Compared to other locations, this one is a bit more centric and not far away from other useful buildings.
2. Ekron Fire Station
If you thought Rosewood had the best base location in Project Zomboid, wait until you see what Build 42 brought. If you travel to Ekron, which is all the way to the west, you’ll encounter one of the best new towns in B42. However, the best building here is the Fire Station.
You can find it close to the town’s entrance and in a neighborhood that shouldn’t have a large zombie population. The dangerous part is the college behind it, but as long as you enter through the main road, you should be fine.
The best thing about it is its layout, which has two floors and a basement. The first floor contains a two-car garage, which might hold even more than two vehicles. The second floor has a lot of beds, a kitchen, and other utilities to help you pass the time. However, the loot inside the building is among the best, as you can find firefighter clothes, axes, and more things. In addition to that, there’s also a basement packed with a laundry room and a training track for whatever reason. If you want to train your sprinting and fitness skills, you can run the track daily. If not, you can dismantle everything to build something different.
1. P.S Delilah
It was time we got a proper boat in Project Zomboid, and Build 42 not only provided that, but it also gave us an excellent base location. It might be a bit controversial, especially with the previous entries, but there are a few reasons we picked this one as our number one.
First, look at the interior. It is gorgeous, well-lit, and has everything you need to survive. Plus, the fact that it is a sort of secluded place means that zombies won’t come your way, which means you’ll be safe most of the time. However, the main reason relies on its location.
Brandenburg is one of the best towns in Knox Country, with some of the best POIs in the game. There’s a military checkpoint to the northwest, a prison to the west, and several other government buildings with a lot of great loot. Also, you can drive straight to Riverside if you take the east road or head south if you want to do loot runs in Ekron. It is a fantastic place, and this boat will help you complete all your post-apocalyptic endeavors.
