Beyoncé is no stranger to commanding a stage, but over the weekend, the global superstar shocked fans during her “Cowboy Carter” tour stop in Paris when she pulled out what appeared to be a cigarette mid-performance. On Sunday, the 42-year-old icon theatrically pretended to smoke the cigarette while strutting around in a dazzling ensemble that included a sparkly silver bustier, high-waisted microshorts, over-the-knee cowboy boots, and a floor-sweeping fur vest.
As seen in fan-taken footage from previous concerts, Beyoncé has incorporated smoking-themed theatrics into her performances, such as when she lights a piano on fire during one of the show’s most dramatic moments. This Paris performance, however, seemed to take the “smoking hot” metaphor to another level.
Despite the cigarette reportedly being a prop, according to the Daily Mail, the moment didn’t sit well with everyone. Social media quickly erupted with mixed reactions, with some praising her for her flair and others accusing her of promoting harmful habits.
“Soon she will be drinking beer on stage,” one user wrote. Another added, “She looks ridiculous and desperate.” Others were harsher: “Disgusting to influence young people like this. Should be jailed,” one person commented. “It’s so sad that some people still regard smoking as ‘cool,’” another added. One person even pointed out, “Paris has banned smoking in public places. Hope they fine her.”
While the French capital is known for its historically relaxed attitude toward smoking, public smoking laws have tightened significantly in recent years. France has banned smoking in most indoor public places and many outdoor areas, particularly those frequented by children.
Beyoncé Silent on Smoking Controversy
Beyoncé has not addressed the controversy directly, and it’s unclear whether the cigarette was part of a pre-planned prop routine or a spontaneous addition. Still, the moment sparked debate online about everything from artistic expression to the responsibility celebrities carry in influencing their fans, particularly younger audiences.

The show made headlines for more than just the cigarette controversy. Fan-shot footage circulating online, including a clip captured by Cardi B, who was in the audience, shows Beyoncé stepping aside during “Crazy in Love” as Jay-Z made a surprise appearance to deliver his verse on stage. As with previous “Cowboy Carter” stops, the Paris show was a family affair. Beyoncé performed alongside her eldest daughter, Blue Ivy, and her mother, Tina Knowles, was also reportedly in attendance with eight-year-old Rumi Carter. Her son, Sir Carter, however, was not seen at the event. While Queen Bey’s fierce fashion and powerful vocals were in full force as usual, it’s the cigarette moment that may end up stealing the spotlight, and not in the way she intended.
