Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland are joining forces to improve the lives of people without homes in Houston. The superstars are giving back to their hometown of Houston, Texas, by building a permanent housing complex. At a press conference on Tuesday, officials announced that the Knowles-Rowland Project would provide 31 new units of housing and support services for those in need in their hometown.
Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland Build a Housing Complex for the Homeless
Beyoncé, 41, and Kelly Rowland, 42, are teaming up to do their part to help combat the housing crisis in their hometown of Houston. According to Harris County officials, the Houston natives are collaborating with the county to create a permanent housing complex in the midtown area.
The Knowles-Rowland House will cost around $8.4 million. The project will receive $7.2 million in funding from The American Rescue plan alongside other contributors like Rice University. The housing complex will contain 31 new permanent housing units built at the Bread of Life gymnasium.
Judge Lina Hidalgo pointed out that there will be a “bigger launch” event for the housing units in September when Beyoncé arrives in Houston for her Renaissance World Tour. County records suggest that the housing project will also offer some services. These services include case managers, peer specialists, and service specialists for mental and behavioral health assistance and transportation.
Houston Pastor Expresses Gratitude to the Superstars
Rudy Rasmus, a local pastor and executive of Bread of Life, expressed his appreciation for the partnership. He acknowledged the efforts Beyoncé, Rowland, and their fellow Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams have made over the years, including donating money from their 1998 hit “No, No, No” to build a youth center in the city. He also added that the project will be the fifth housing development in Precinct 1 over the last 17 years.
Earlier in April, Beyoncé engaged in another philanthropic initiative. She announced a $2 million donation to help college students and entrepreneurs through her BeyGOOD Foundation.
The goal of the foundation, which she founded in 2013, is to empower communities with resources and opportunities. In over a decade, BeyGOOD has successfully made an impact through causes such as education, entrepreneurship funding, disaster relief, and nonprofit support, among others.
