New details are emerging about Piers Morgan and his apology to Beyoncé and Jay Z. The Brittish talk show host made waves recently when a clip from his show, Uncensored, went viral online. In it, he apologized to two of the industry’s biggest stars for airing an interview that contained “totally false” claims about them. If you’re familiar with Piers, then you know getting him to utter the words “I’m sorry” is no easy task. His retracted statement led some people to claim he was sent a cease and desist letter from the Carters’ attorney. However, during an interview with TMZ, Alex Spiro said he didn’t send Piers Morgan a cease and desist letter; he gave him an “ultimatum.”
What Went Down Between Bey and Jay’s Lawyers and Piers Morgan?
It was surprising to hear Piers Morgan apologize to Bey and Jay; however, when their lawyer revealed he’d given him an “ultimatum,” it began to make sense.
“There’s rumors, and then there’s nonsense,” Alex told TMZ about Piers’ interview with failed ’90s singer Jaguar Wright. “And this is one step further.” He continued, saying Wright’s comments were “pointed and formal” accusations the stars needed to respond to. “I think somebody reported it was a cease and desist. It was quite bluntly an ultimatum, which is, remove that false accusation that’s demonstrably false, or a court’s going to order you to.”
Last week, Jaguar’s comments, calling Bey and Jay “victim-making” machines, shook the internet to its core. After receiving backlash from fans and a notice from the Carters’ legal team, Morgan issued an apology.
Piers’ Apology to the Carters
“Jaguar, unexpectedly, made several serious allegations about Jay-Z and Beyoncé during that interview. As I said in the moment, they were not present to respond or defend themselves, but now they have,” Morgan said. “We had lawyers contact us to say that those claims were totally false and have no basis in fact, and we’ve therefore complied with a legal request to cut them from the original interview.”
He continued: “Editing interviews is not something we do lightly at a show called Uncensored, but like the proverbial cries of fire in a crowded theater, there are legal limits on us, too. And we apologize to Jay-Z and Beyoncé.”
Elsewhere, during his chat with TMZ, Spiro said he believed Piers and his team the “wise choice and acted accordingly.” Most importantly, his concerns are with the true victims of this case. “What [Piers] did effectively was drone out the voices of actual victims in an ongoing case in an ongoing investigation, and that was too much for me.”
