Geddie was born on July 17, 1955, in San Antonio, Texas, meaning he died three days after his 68th birthday. Geddie attended the University of Texas in Austin, majoring in communications and film. Geddie began his media career buffing floors at KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City. Eventually, he was able to move up to shooting film. During his time with KOCO-TV, he met his wife, Barbara Geddie, whom he was married to for 44 years.
Geddie achieved six local Emmys and was Regional Cameraman of the Year working for WKYC in Cleveland. He earned the “one-man band” title for always carrying heavy equipment and a tape recorder alone. Due to having polio as a child, this heavy lifting caused him residual pain.
Bill Geddie began working as a TV producer when he joined PM Magazine in San Francisco. Eventually, he moved to New York to work as a producer for Good Morning America.
Bill Geddie and Walters co-created The View in 1997. He was often featured on the show and had well-known disagreements with Star Jones, Rosie O’Donnell, and guest host Kathy Griffin. After Walters retired, Geddie was ousted from the show in 2014. Geddie served as executive producer for Tamron Hall from January 2019 to March 2020.
In 2011, Bill Geddie earned an Outstanding Alumni Award from his alma mater. In his spare time, Geddie dabbled in screenwriting. He wrote the script for Unforgettable, a 1996 film starring Ray Liotta and Linda Fiorentino.
Geddie is survived by his wife and their daughters, Allison and Lauren.
