A biopic exploring the life of Star Trek‘s creator Gene Roddenberry is in the works at Roddenberry Entertainment.

According to a report from Variety, the Gene Roddenberry biopic is being co-produced. The producing duo is Roddenberry’s son, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth. Currently, the two serve as executive producers on both the currently airing Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard. The Emmy-winning writer of You Don’t Know Jack, Adam Mazer, will write the screenplay. However, there is no director or cast attached to the project yet.

According to Variety, the biopic will showcase Roddenberry’s life before and after creating Star Trek. It will also include him surviving two plane crashes as well as the events leading up to his death. As many fans remember, Roddenberry passed away in 1991 just as Star Trek: The Next Generation was taking off.

The Original Crew

Today, August 19, 2021, would have been Roddenberry’s 100th birthday. He was born in El Paso, Texas in 1921 but raised in Los Angeles. Before becoming a writer, Roddenberry was a pilot. He received his pilot’s license through the United States Army Air Corps. After, he flew for the Air Force in World War II and then for Pan American World Airways (Pan Am).

Roddenberry also served as a member of the Los Angeles Police Department. He works primarily in the traffic division before he began writing speeches for the chief of police. In June of 1956, he left the force to concentrate on writing.

As a writer, Roddenberry wrote for a number of TV series, including The West Point Story and Have Gun — Will Travel. However, he wanted to become a producer in order to have creative control of his projects.

After many years in the TV industry, Roddenberry created Star Trek in 1964. The show premiered two years later in 1966 and ran for three seasons. It was notable at the time for its diverse cast and exploration of science-fiction themes. It stands as one of the most important and celebrated TV series of all time.
