A content creator in Brooklyn is alleging that she was recently discriminated against because of the color of her skin at the newly opened Greensburg Café in Williamsburg. The woman said in a TikTok video that she had gone to the café with her friend to try out their tiramisu matcha drink after seeing it advertised on social media. However, after they arrived and placed their order, only her companion and every other customer who came after them received their drinks on time.
The woman said that her friend had to complain on her behalf. “My friend she’s like goes up to the counter like ‘hey like you skipped my friend’s drink. She ordered before me and I already got my drink,’” she said. The employee asked what her order was and went ahead to make it, but not without taking her “sweet sweet time.” When the woman finally received her drink, she claimed it did not resemble the one promoted online. She said she questioned the staff about the difference, but was brushed off with the explanation that it “tastes the same.”
The woman refused to take the drink and asked for a replacement. Even though the employee agreed to remake it, they allegedly didn’t prioritize doing so and continued serving multiple customers. It got to a point where the woman had to step in to demand that her order be finished. “I had been waiting for 20 minutes… Please finish making my drink… Look at my drink,” she told the worker. According to her, although she finally got her drink, the experience made her feel unwelcome in the establishment. While she initially hoped the issue was due to poor training, she noted it left her questioning whether bias played a role. “If I’m going to have a bad customer experience, we all can have a bad customer experience then,” she said.
What People Are Saying About the Brooklyn Café Incident
Netizens had mixed reactions, but many sympathized with her perspective. One wrote, “They want to make you feel uncomfortable,” while another said, “The micro aggressions have gone full on macro aggressions. This is embarrassing for them.” A third commented, “In this economy, this is the way they treat customers. 😳” A fourth added, “Put it on Google review. Email the management. No one should spend money there.”
One person thought she “should have asked for a refund,” and another agreed, writing, “Oh no no no refund immediately! In this climate we have to be vigilant on where we spend our money.” However, one commenter felt that, given the reputation of the area, she should have expected friction. “As a native, no shade, you set yourself up going to Williamsburg. Nobody gonna tell you this, but that’s basically a red state disguised as a borough,” they wrote.
