The announcement of this yearโ€™s Oscar nominations marks the first time a superhero film is nominated for an award. The Ryan Coogler directed Black Panther is up for the nomination of Best Picture among six other awards.

The remaining six for 2018โ€™s adventure set in the technologically advanced kingdom of Wakanda are Best Production Design, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song: All the Stars by Kendrick Lamar and SZA.

Other Best Picture nominations are BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star is Born, and Vice.

Marvel Entertainment posted their reaction to the nomination for Black Panther.

Two other superhero films, Avengers: Infinity War: nominated for Best Visual Effects and Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse: nominated for Best Animated Feature, are included in this year’s awards. Black Panther was released in February, making it the earliest superhero film released, therefore the first to be nominated.

Those arenโ€™t the only films and actors linked to Marvel and Disney owned franchises included in this yearโ€™s nominations. At Eternityโ€™s Gate actor Willem Dafoe is nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Dafoe played the Green Goblin in 2002โ€™s Sam Raimi directed Spider-Man film. While Sam Elliot, who appeared in Hulk and Ghost Rider, is up for Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Star is Born.

Glenn Close is in the running for Best Actress in a Leading Role for The Wife. While Bradley Cooper is nominated for his role in A Star is Born. Both appeared in Marvelโ€™s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Sam Rockwell, one of the villains in Iron Man 2 is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in Vice.

Adam Driver, who plays Kylo Ren in Star Wars, is up for Best Supporting Actor in BlacKkKlansman.

The 2019 Oscars will be Sunday, February 24th.
